Meet the Wild Atlantic

Where rugged cliff faces meet the untamable sea

The North Atlantic Ocean surrounds the island, exposing it to some of the roughest waves and coldest ultramarine-coloured waters. It is a place where invigorating salty air crystallises on your skin and the strong winds can sweep your feet out from under you. The coastline is known for its unique geographical features that have inspired many myths and legends: from a contest of giants to the melancholic merrows and the changeable selkies.

A Relationship with the Sea

The wild Atlantic Ocean has been part of local life for centuries. Coastal communities have formed a deep relationship with the sea, relying on it for food, trade and connection to other communities across the waters. They have been shaped by the tides and winds as much as the rough coastline itself. They didn't try to tame it. They knew that was impossible. They grew to understand the sea and its rhythmic nature, to revere it for its resilience and its power of renewal.

Stories of the Sea

Fishermen along these coasts often told tales of the Merrow — the Merpeople who, like the fishermen, were part of two worlds: the land and the sea. There are several stories of the beautiful sea fairies helping sailors, or luring them to their home under the waves.

It is not just the sea that inspired stories, but the unique landscapes themselves. The geological formation known as the Giant's Causeway comprises over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns. The near-perfect hexagonal shapes were formed by cooling volcanic activity — though oral tradition has a different tale to tell. Legend has it there were once giants. When a threat came from across the Irish Sea, Fionn Mac Cumhaill began building the Giant's Causeway. When he found out he couldn't beat his rival with strength, he turned to his wits and tricked his opponent into retreating back to Scotland, tearing down the bridge between the two.

At Enniskinn, we revere the power of the Atlantic and love the stories that surround it. The Wild Atlantic fragrance profile is as unique as the rugged coastline and as fresh as a salty sea breeze — a blend of essential oils that embodies the spirit and character of the Atlantic that we owe so much to.

Fragrance notes: Sage · Niaouli · Hyssop
