Brigid & Her Story

Goddess, saint, and symbol — a legend as layered as the land

Brigid is a name infused with legends. She has deep connections to myths, stories, and historical accounts stretching back centuries. To some, she was a mythical goddess associated with wisdom, poetry, healing and protection. To others, she was 'Mary of the Gaels'. Her miracles are renowned and she is regarded among the Saints.

Her name is thought to be derived from Proto-Celtic, meaning 'exalted one', and she begins her long list of legends with associations to the Indo-European goddess of dawn.

The Goddess

Brigid appears in stories as a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the divine race that inhabited the island long before humans. She was known as the patron goddess of wisdom, poetry, healing, protection, smithing and domesticated animals. In medieval poetry she was described as a good woman with a radiant light, often standing as a figurehead for the people. She was said to have performed many miracles of healing and generosity.

The Saint

St Brigid — the Brigid of Kildare — shares many qualities with her mythical counterpart. She is considered the patroness of healers, poets, blacksmiths, livestock and dairy workers. She is associated with pilgrimage, and the waters of her wells were known for their healing properties across the island.

Throughout these stories, her character remains one of strength in kindness and wisdom in humility. Today, Brigid is a strong cultural and heritage symbol, serving as a bridge between historical, mythical, and Christian worlds. It's no surprise she has earned the name "the goddess whom poets adored".

We at Enniskinn adore her too. Her fragrance profile is a blend of perfect harmony and warm serenity. Frankincense is associated with wisdom and has been used for centuries for its anti-aging and skin-repairing properties. Lavender is celebrated for its soothing aroma and calming qualities. Together with the bright, uplifting notes of lemon, this blend honours the spirit of Brigid — her wisdom, her serenity, and her radiant light.
